Drexciya Japan
An audiovisual exploration of the power of myths. Shown below is a music video I edited for the track Wavejumper by the trailblazing Detroit electro duo Drexciya from their EP Aquatic Invasion. The video is a compilation of archival footage from Japanese World War Two Era Naval Propaganda. Drexciya was famous for creating a nautical afro-futurist myth through its music, graphic novels and performer personas as a reaction to, and escape from, the racism and adversity the black communit experienced in 1980s Detroit. During the Meiji Restoration, the Empire of Japan also created a myth, centred around a divinely-chosen emperor, to unite its country as a reaction to the threat posed by its more centralised, militarised and modernised enemies. This myth served as justification and engine for the Empire's own militarisation and centralisation which allowed it to pool its resources and The video therefore highlights the power of the myth and its capacity to be an agent of both good and evil.
